Trial set for Lucas Webb murder

A jury trial date has been set for Melissa Webb, 33, of Holt, who is charged with second-degree murder, a class A felony, and abuse of a child, a class B felony, in connection with the death of her stepson, Lucas Webb, 4.

The trial is scheduled to begin May 12, 2014, in Clinton County Circuit Court. The date was set in a Sept. 3 hearing following her July 2 arraignment, where she entered a plea of not guilty. She is in the Clinton County jail.

Her husband, Justin Webb, 35, of Holt is still awaiting a preliminary hearing, which has been continued to Oct. 25. The hearing will determine whether there is probable cause to bind him over to circuit court for trial. He faces the same charges. He was released on $500,000 bond.

Lucas died Oct. 15, 2012, after a Clinton County ambulance responded to a call from Melissa Webb about an unresponsive child. The boy was taken from the home he lived in with Justin and Melissa Webb by ambulance to Liberty Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy performed the day after Lucas died determined the cause of death as blunt-force trauma to the abdomen. Medical evidence showed the injury had been inflicted 12 to 24 hours before he died.

The autopsy also indicated Lucas’ ribs had been fractured and separated six to eight weeks prior to his death.
